No wand waving required on housing – just bold policies to get people into their own homes

The Prime Minister has washed her hands of the crisis in affordable housing, says the Alliance Party.

Alliance Party President Victor Billot says Helen Clark’s comments on television that “you can’t wave a wand and bring the prices down” showed a casual attitude out of step with the pressure many families and individuals were under.

“I can understand it isn’t a pressing issue for the top income bracket, but in the last few years house prices have skyrocketed and young people are faced with astronomical mortgages and rents.”

Mr Billot says no wand waving or other magical tricks from Helen Clark are required, but there are a whole range of practical policies that could be quickly put in place. Read the rest of this entry »

Teenagers hammered with student debt

As students around New Zealand head back to for another year of tertiary education, tens of thousands of teenagers will be plunged into massive debt, says Alliance Party Youth Spokesperson Matthew Stephen.

The senior Otago University student says the burden of student fees is no way to create a “knowledge society.”

“After busting through the 8 billion dollar mark in 2005, New Zealand’s student loan debt continues to swell.”

Under the Labour Government of Helen Clark course fees have continued to rise: Student fees now account for around a third of tertiary institutions’ income, compared to 19 percent in Howard’s Australia. The Government now predicts that student loan debt will reach $12.7 billion by 2014/15. Read the rest of this entry »

No deals with National – let’s put the people in charge instead

The recent talk of deals between the Green Party and Maori Party with the National Party means working people, beneficiaries and students have to get behind a party that looks after their interests – the Alliance.

Alliance Party President Victor Billot says the time is right for a party that goes out to bat for working class New Zealanders and which won’t go near the National Party with a barge pole.

Lights out, no one home at Overseas Investment Office

Several days ago, CAFCA pointed out that anyone visiting the Overseas Investment Office website would find the following message:

“SEASONS’ GREETINGS

Seasons’ Greetings to you all. The Overseas Investment Office appreciates your support and assistance during 2006. The office will be closed from Friday 22 December 2006 until Monday 8 January 2007. If you have any urgent queries during that period, please write to us at oio@linz.govt.nz and we will respond to you as soon as we are able.

Please also note that both the Minister of Finance and the Minister for Land Information will not be available to consider applications that require their decision from 19 December 2006 until 24 January 2007.”

As of Thursday 15 February 2007, nothing has changed, and along with Murray Horton of CAFCA, we wonder if it makes any difference anyway?

New Zealand sold to overseas bidder – but no details available as yet, or ever

The bureaucrats who are supposed to oversee any overseas selloff of New Zealand can’t be bothered supplying a report to the New Zealand public, or even Parliament.

Alliance Party President Victor Billot says a refusal to hand over detailed statistics on foreign ownership by the Overseas Investment Office is a sign that it’s time to raise the banana republic flag over Parliament Buildings.

Ex-airman takes flak from Air NZ CEO in jobs debate

84-year old ex-airman Eric Gamble of Christchurch wrote an email on Friday to Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe saying a plan to outsource 1800 jobs was a case of “corporate bullying.”
Mr Gamble served in the RAF in World War Two, and the RNZAF in the Malaya Emergency, and after leaving the services worked for decades throughout New Zealand as a qualified Flight Service Officer and supervisor.
The active Alliance Party member takes a keen interest in politics and current affairs – and he feels strongly about the plan for Air New Zealand to outsource hundreds of jobs.
He was surprised to hear back from Mr Fyfe – who seems to be very sensitive to such matters and launched into a broadside. Read the rest of this entry »
