Fisher and Paykel layoffs show the future of free market globalization for workers

The Alliance Party says the layoff of 350 workers at Fisher and Paykel is a result of free market policies and corporate globalization.

Alliance Party President Victor Billot says the Fisher and Paykel plant closure shows the future of globalization for New Zealand workers and had to be resisted.

Wellington Alliance Meeting, Sunday 6 May

Alliance President Victor Billot will be speaking at the Sunday 6 May meeting of the Wellington Alliance. The meeting is from 2-4pm at Crossways Community Centre, Mt Victoria, corner Elizabeth and Brougham Streets.
The topic for discussion will be ways in which we can build up the Alliance as the democratic socialist alternative to the conservative and undemocratic politics we have in New Zealand currently.

Air New Zealand workers face union busting – how you can help

The Service and Food Workers Union is seeking urgent mediation to deal with alleged harassment of its union members by Air New Zealand managers.
Managers have been systematically phoning SFWU members and threatening them with dire consequences if they do not leave their union. The union has obtained a copy of an Air NZ script headed “Questions and answers to assist with the briefing of SFWU membership – not to be issued or distributed.” Read the rest of this entry »

“Democratic Socialism in New Zealand”: An Auckland Public Lecture by Professor Jim Flynn

Professor Jim Flynn, Emeritus Professor of Political Studies at the University of Otago, will present a public lecture “Democratic Socialism in New Zealand” on Friday 13 April 2007, at Lecture Room 105-029, Clocktower Building, University of Auckland, starting at 7.30pm.

The lecture will consider how the humane principles of democratic socialism are relevant to New Zealand today.

Professor Flynn says some of the key policies of democratic socialism include universal access to publicly funded health care and education, and the use of a progressive taxation system to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of wealth. Read the rest of this entry »
