Alliance Party says Auckland Airport should be in public ownership

The Alliance Party says the Auckland Airport should be returned to public control, not sold to a global corporation.

Alliance Party transport spokesperson Robert van Ruyssevelt says the current buyout shows public infrastructure is continuing to be auctioned off.

“The Alliance says important and profitable infrastructure like this should be owned and managed for the benefit of the people of New Zealand by the people of New Zealand.” Read the rest of this entry »

Alliance Party says hospital lockout can be solved by Government action

The Alliance Party says the lockout of eight hundred low paid hospital workers by their employer Spotless Services Ltd is a result of current health policies.

Alliance Party President Victor Billot says the problem is caused by hospital work being outsourced to transnational companies who drive down wages and conditions.

“The Alliance Party says that these workers should be employed directly by the District Health Boards under decent agreements, or improved wage rates and conditions must be built into contracts with providers.”

He says that national agreements in the sector should be compulsory. Read the rest of this entry »

“Democratic Socialism in New Zealand”: A Christchurch Public Lecture by Professor Jim Flynn

Professor Jim Flynn, Emeritus Professor of Political Studies at the University of Otago, will present a public lecture “Democratic Socialism in New Zealand” on Sunday 15 July 2007, at the Trade Union Centre, 199 Armagh Street, Christchurch, starting at midday.

The lecture will consider how the humane principles of democratic socialism are relevant to New Zealand today.

Professor Flynn says some of the key policies of democratic socialism include universal access to publicly funded health care and education, and the use of a progressive taxation system to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of wealth.

He says the move away from the idea of equality is causing profound damage to society and the foundations of democracy.

“Throughout the twentieth century, great progress was made towards a society where all people could enjoy security and equality, but in recent decades this positive trend has been reversed and we are moving towards a society divided on the basis of wealth.” Read the rest of this entry »

Jim Flynn against eugenics

A report appeared in the Sunday Star Times (8 July 2007) where Professor Jim Flynn was wrongly identified as supporting the idea of “eugenics.”

Jim Flynn is Alliance spokesperson on finance and tax, although the article was not related in any way to the Alliance.

Jim Flynn appeared on Close Up last night Monday 9 July and in a live interview strongly denied any such views. For those of you with broadband internet, you may wish to see the interview which can be found at TVNZ.

Jim is internationally known for his academic research into IQ and has consistently argued against eugenics and racist ideas in his work. He has consistently supported social measures to reduce inequality and improve life for all people, not just the wealthy.

Below Jim Flynn explains his position in the debate. Read the rest of this entry »
