Alliance education spokesperson Richard Wallis says that the Alliance fully supports New Zealand’s secondary teachers in their decision to hold a one day strike on 12 September.
“The working conditions of teachers are the learning conditions of students in our schools today.”

Alliance Education Spokesperson Richard Wallis says the lack of progress in teachers conditions and class sizes shows a lack of political will to improve our education system.
Mr Wallis, who works as a secondary teacher, says the situation shows the Labour-led Government does not value the education of today’s youth.
He says it is disappointing but not surprising that New Zealand’s secondary teachers have had to step back from their three year wage claim and lodge a one year claim. Read the rest of this entry »

Recent incidents of cruelty and brutality, especially within families, are powerful reminders that something has badly gone wrong in many peoples lives.
The victims, so often, are those without the ability to defend themselves: children.
It is difficult to try to understand these events.
I am not a psychologist, and have no direct personal experience, so I can only make an educated guess at the type of behaviours and situations that lead to small children being brutally assaulted and murdered.
But I do have a firm view on the wider developments within New Zealand which underlie our arrival at this troubled point.
The recent attacks on children are not isolated incidents. They reflect a wider violence and a wider breakdown of what we regard as basic human values. Read the rest of this entry »
