Government position on free trade dishonest

The Alliance Party says that Trade Minister Phil Goff’s comments on free trade deals highlight a Labour Government that will ignore any social and environmental concerns in its haste to sign the dotted line at any cost.

Alliance Party co-leader Victor Billot says the Government position on free trade is completely dishonest.

“On one hand they carry on about sustainability and nation building, then the next day they are signing up to deals that will continue to integrate us into the environmental and social disasters of globalization, which are completely unsustainable.” Read the rest of this entry »

Alliance supports calls for rethink of SIT Funding

The Alliance Party is supporting the call from the Southern Institute of Technology in Invercargill for the Tertiary Education Commission to reconsider its recent funding decisions.

Alliance says aged health care workers and taxpayers being ripped off

Alliance Party co-leader Kay Murray says Ryman Healthcare announced a 29% increase in profits for the six months to September 2007, but workers in its services continue to struggle with meagre wage increases.

Rymans, a major health care provider in Otago, admits it is one of the organizations that refuses to meet a contractually agreed minimum hourly rate of $12.55 and a wage rise of $1 per hour despite being provided with extra funds to do so by the Otago District Health Board. Feilding High School offer highlights need for education investment

The Alliance Party says a decision by Feilding High School to offer incentives to entice teachers to their school highlights a lack of political will to deal with problems in the education sector.

Alliance education spokesperson Richard Wallis says a decision to offer a $17 000 bonus to get teachers to teach at the high school shows the need for a significant increase investment in the education sector. Read the rest of this entry »

Alliance members join Dunedin picket

Alsco Picket
Alliance members joined the picket line of Alsco laundry workers in Dunedin in November in their quest for improved wages and conditions. The workers who are members of the Service and Food Workers Union have now settled with their employer.
