The Alliance Party is today reiterating its call for urgent action on student debt by supporting the New Zealand Union of Students’ Association’s student debt campaign.
The average student debt is now reached $28,838, 147 percent higher than in 1998, according to research carried out on behalf of the New Zealand Union of Students’ Association’s.

Here we are at the beginning of the election year and the Alliance has hit the ground running. The National Council has had its first teleconference and most branches have met at least once.
Housing
The Alliance has already generated some interest by reminding people of a capital gains tax on property investment to stabilize the housing situation in New Zealand. The Alliance policy excludes this tax on the family home. Our tax spokesperson Professor Jim Flynn has done an excellent job of explaining our policy to the media and the result has been at least a couple of sympathetic articles. Alliance Party co-leader Victor Billot says the Labour Government’s desperation to sign a free trade deal with China is behind a high level decision to stop athletes from commenting on political issues at the Beijing Olympics.
“It is fascinating to watch the levels of hypocrisy a Labour Government will go to fit in with the free trade deal, which is what lies behind their silence on any issue to do with China.”

Alliance Party co-leader Kay Murray says the Alliance sees young people as one of New Zealand’s biggest assets, who are in the main hard working, caring and enthusiastic, and who make a positive contribution to their communities.
“It seems like our current political leadership instead sees many young people - the future generation - as a threat and a problem. The failure here is the failure of our social system and political system, that has let down many families and communities.”

Alliance Party energy spokesperson Ian Tinkler says New Zealand is facing another power crisis, despite the vital need for a stable and secure electricity supply to households and industry.
Mr Tinkler says the underlying cause is the competitive model of electricity generation.
