Alliance members joined the picket line of Alsco laundry workers in Dunedin in November in their quest for improved wages and conditions. The workers who are members of the Service and Food Workers Union have now settled with their employer.

Alliance Party co-leader Victor Billot will speak at a public meeting in Wellington on Sunday 18 November.

The Alliance Party is holding its 2007 national conference in Dunedin on Labour Weekend, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October.
Delegates will gather from around New Zealand to elect co-leaders for the 2008 election year, discuss new policy and strategy, and hear from high profile speakers in open to the public sessions.
Alliance Party President Victor Billot says the party is positioning itself as the “strong left wing voice” in New Zealand politics.
He says the Alliance has key political goals based around the “public good” including free education, quality public health care, affordable housing and power, and secure well paid jobs. Read the rest of this entry »

The Alliance has endorsed the “Our World is not for sale” campaign.
There will be a rally and march to the US-NZ partnership forum in Auckland, meeting in Aotea Square at 12 noon, Monday 10 September 2007. For more information, see the Our World is not for sale website.

We invite all members to attend their Regional Meetings over August. These meetings will decide remits and delegates for our National Conference in October. They will also be registering interest for those who wish to be Alliance candidates.

The Alliance Party says the lockout of eight hundred low paid hospital workers by their employer Spotless Services Ltd is a result of current health policies.
Alliance Party President Victor Billot says the problem is caused by hospital work being outsourced to transnational companies who drive down wages and conditions.
“The Alliance Party says that these workers should be employed directly by the District Health Boards under decent agreements, or improved wage rates and conditions must be built into contracts with providers.”

The Alliance Party is to back up its stance against “pokie” machines in Waitakere City where there is a high number of victims of this addictive form of gambling.
Alliance Auckland chairperson Robert van Ruyssevelt says the Alliance wants to return the licensing trust to its core business of sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages in a responsible way that meets the needs of local people.
He says the Alliance wants to remove “pokie” machines from all premises owned or operated by the trust as soon as possible.
The Alliance has called a public meeting on the issue at the Kelston Community Centre, corner Great North Road and Awaroa Road at 2.00pm Saturday 28 July 2007. Read the rest of this entry »
