Clutha Southland: Marvin Hubbard

Name: Marvin Hubbard

Candidate Profile:
Marvin was a foundation member of the New Labour Party. He grew up in a working class, political family in America. When he was young he became involved in the civil rights movement and later became involved in the anti-war movement. The political assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968 caused him to think that America, no longer had a positive future that he wished to support. Together with his wife he immigrated to New Zealand in 1973. He became a citizen of New Zealand in 1978.

Until the 1990s, he was employed by the New Zealand Post Office. After leaving the Post Office he started and produced a community in-depth radio programme called Community or Chaos, which features one hour of interviews between him and a studio guest.

He is married with two grown children.

The New Labour Party, and now the Alliance has always been his chosen political vehicle.

He is the Dunedin/Otago Alliance Regional Representative.

He has always been a strong union supporter. He actively supported the locked out Milton workers, and took part in the Dunedin Otago Southland Wharfies Union in their successful efforts to resist Mainland’s efforts to destroy the Wharfies Union.

Marvin is standing with the Alliance in order to keep Democratic Socialism alive, as the best alternative to a system that is in terminal crisis, financially, socially and environmentally!

He is retired but still an activist.
